Digging through the shelves here in the basement, getting caught up on some of my Hard Case reading.  Man, I love it when an author nails the ending like Von Doviak does here.  Overall a fun read, interesting and well-thought out approach to a complicated story.  A very strong first novel.

Recently rewatched the 1991 Warren Beatty Gangster pic Bugsy, which is pretty good.  A few days later I was rooting around in some old magazines and came across an article on the death of Bugsy's girlfriend, Virginia Hill (played by Annnette Bening in the movie), in the September 1966 issue of Companion.  Consort a number of powerful and dangerous gangsters in the 40s and early 50s, Hill eventually married a ski instructor and fled the US with him to avoid troubles over unpaid income tax in 1954.  She died in the summer of 1966 near Salzburg, Austria, of an overdose of sleeping pills, an apparent suicide.
