"I’m the guy who gets to the bottom of things.  That doesn’t mean I always like the view from the bottom."

Pike isn’t too worried when his girlfriend, Kim, kills her husband, Harry.  After all, Harry was a violent wife-beater, and the killing is clearly self-defense.  Legalities, however, don’t seem to matter much to Harry.   Neither does being dead.  Now Pike must figure out the weird magic—or is it science?—that has an angry ex-husband hunting him before it’s too late.

The Murder of Theora Hix: A Rare True-Crime Classic

On the morning of June 14th, 1929, the battered body of a woman was found on the outskirts of Columbus.  Investigators identified the woman as Ohio State University medical student Theora Hix.  Within a few days, the police arrested a suspect whose identity set the news wires buzzing: OSU faculty member and gold-medal Olympian James H. Snook.

When the trial began, reporters jammed the courtroom and members of the public camped out in line for a chance to sit in the gallery.  People across the country followed the events in their daily papers.  But not everything said in the courtroom was printable by the standards of 1920s journalism. Many of the racy details of Snook’s testimony about what happened on the rifle range on the night of June 13th was not available to the public…that is, not until The Murder of Theora Hix hit newsstands in August, 1929, presenting the public with all the details that didn’t make it into the daily papers.

Although quickly suppressed, copies of the book survived in private collections.  Now you can download a carefully recreated PDF version of this true-crime rarity and once again get a rare glimpse into the courtroom during one of the most sensational media trials of the 20th century.
